Anson talking about the first half of the process making the new film DISTANCE, as it happens…DIRECTORS THOUGHTS – MAKING THE CAMP4 FILM DISTANCECamp4 Partner and Director Anson Fogel is in the middle of making a film called Distance with co-director/writer Alex Fuller. We asked him to give you all a glimpse into his process as it happens. PART 1: WRITING AND PREP"You have to have the entire picture there in your mind before you make it. And if you don't, you're not a director, you're a guesser." – Clint Eastwood"You write the film you want, shoot the film you can afford, and edit the film you have" – anonymous IDEA: For years, I've been exploring stories in a specific world – the rural American West in the late 80's, the world I grew up in. Distance is the 3rd short I've written in that world, and in many ways the first real effort – the prior 2 films were responses to a challenge given to me by a mentor, and were experimental. This story revolves around a character and setting I've thought a lot about – Alex and I fleshed out the outline and characters one night on her couch, and then I wrote the script and she wrote the VO. We revised, revised, revised and revised again, and on version 5 or so, we had something we thought was good enough to move forward with. WRITING: With commercials, brand work, outdoor shorts – and now fictional shorts – I can't overemphasize how important writing and visualization is. It is without question the most critical part. What Clint Eastwood says is dead on. So as with anything else I do, I write down ideas, and then revise, revise, revise ruthlessly. Maybe 1% of my ideas make it anywhere, and I'm hard as hell on them. So for Distance, it was the same – we spent a ton of time writing, arguing, writing, changing, and on and on. We did not just write a script – we also wrote detailed backstories on each of the characters for the actors and for us. We ended up with a 9 page script, and a 10 page character profile set. BUDGETING: The budget forces you to figure out what you need, when you need it and with who. From meals to miles, lights to lenses and all the little things in between, preparation is everything on these more complex shoots. We use Google Docs to share budgets, and hired a super experienced producer and AD, Matias Alvarez – an old friend – to help us with crew, budgets, planning and prep. He also was our AD on set. PRODUCTION DESIGN: This is another word for sets and props, and at times wardrobe. We worked with Stephen Turner, a PD/Art Department specialist who also grew up on a Wyoming ranch, to source old beer cans, clothing, props etc. Most of our props and wardrobe we bought from thrift stores and on eBay. Besides authenticity – what would exist in a trailer house in late 80's Wyoming? We wanted a very toned down color palette. We wanted the only colors on screen to be from the actor's skin, and their wardrobe – the world they are in both interior and exterior is very flat. The look of a film goes far beyond the camera. CASTING: Its often said that most of the quality of a film is determined by the script, and the casting. If you get those 2 things right, you may be able to make a good film. There are still thousands of other things to be done right, but without these 2, you're screwed no matter what. We used Sylvia Gregory Casting in Denver, and had a casting call for the 3 primary roles. We sat through 40 or 50 readings, and we really won the lottery when it came to all the roles. Some of our winners submitted video auditions, some showed up in person. The Girl, played by Violet Bailes – had been cast in person by another actress, but when Violet gave us her tape online, we got on Skype with her and changed our minds. That was the right decision. PREP: We have real jobs – Alex as an Ad Agency Creative Director, and myself directing brand work for Camp4 – but for most of March, all of our spare time was taken up finding trailer homes, wardrobe, working out SAG contracts and budgets, choosing lighting packages, and then on set, getting everything in place, pulling stuck trucks our of the mud, and coordinating schedules, RV's and thousands of other details. I really subscribe to the Eastwood style of filmmaking – super organized, calm, and efficient on set – which requires that you do everything BEFORE you show up, not WHEN you show up. On set, I want to direct actors, camera, lighting and blocking – create a space for actors to act. Simple as that. With careful prep and writing, this happens. Without it…don't think about that. SHOT LISTS AND CAMERA PLANS: The camera is the audience's perspective; where you place it, with what lens and lighting, changes everything in terms of emotion and pacing. So before shooting, I know mostly how and where I'll shoot the entire film. Ons et, there is flexibility and new magic emerges, but there a clear plan. Again, read Clint's quote. I've attached here the first page of our set copy of the script – you can see our scene labels and shot notes for that first page….typed in advance. NEXT: PART 2 – SHOOTING

A few weeks ago, through the power of the internet, we connected with a non-profit Great White Shark research organization out of Park City called OCEARCH. The owner, Chris Fischer is as close to a modern day Jaques Cousteau as you can get.

We were lucky enough to be able to send two young & hungry filmmakers on their most recent expedition off the coast of Chile to capture the adventure of tracking Great White Sharks.

This is their first dispatch from the trip. We couldn't be more proud of our boys and more psyched for the opportunity to work with an organization like Ocearch. Expedition Leader Chris Fischer leads the OCEARCH team out to the remote Juan Fernandez Islands. Watch as the team moves over 400 miles off shore in the firs…
